The Swimming Monkeys of Samut Songkhram

Swimming Monkeys of Samut Songkhram - Thailand

This is a fantastic and unique day trip that is only 94 kilometers southwest of Bangkok (measured from Democracy Monument).

Feeding the monkeys bananas and seeing them swim was tremendous fun! The scenery was beautiful, and it was hard to imagine that, just a couple of hours ago, we were in the big concrete metropolis of Bangkok…

In theory, you can make the drive in as little as 1 hour and 30 minutes. The Bangkok traffic was very congested when we departed at 10 AM on Saturday, and the trip took us closer to 2 hours and 15 minutes. Most of our additional driving time was simply fighting our way out of the Bangkok gridlock – at a very slow crawl.

To start your monkey adventure, you will hire a boat at the Khlong Khon pier. Park at the temple across the street from the pier and walk across.

The price for the 1.5 – 2 hour trip is 700 THB / 22 USD. The price is per boat. If you want to reduce the cost, you can bring friends to split the price.

Our guide was fantastic. You can tell that he loves the monkeys and enjoys sharing them with the public. The trip was not hurried or rushed. He speaks very little English, but, even if you speak no Thai, this should present no obstacle to enjoying the trip. It may, however, make it harder to pre-arrange a trip!

After choosing our guide, he walked us to the adjacent food stalls to purchase bananas. The bananas were 20 THB per large bunch. We purchased two bunches, and this was plenty for our trip. Of course, you can bring your own bananas if you have them.

All loaded up with our bananas, we boarded the boat and headed out Khlong Khon to the swimming monkeys!

Just before entering the ocean, we made a right hand turn into the mangroves and, before long, we started seeing monkeys.

We pulled to the side, and our guide walked to the front of the boat to partake in the fun. Whenever the monkeys became too aggressive or tried to steal Sara’s bananas, he would shoo them away.

Not all of the monkeys were eager to swim for the bananas. One monkey sat above the boat and waited patiently for Sara to toss bananas up to him!

Of course, the one photo I took was of him missing Sara’s toss!

The larger groups of tourists did not seem to have the opportunity to interact with the monkeys as much as we did. They simply tossed the bananas into the water and watched the monkeys dive for them. We enjoyed having the extra room in the boat for us to move around and for the monkeys to get to join us on board! I think this is one case that I certainly enjoy paying more per person for a better experience.

After all of our bananas were distributed, we retraced our path to Khlong Khon, turned right and headed out to sea to view the fishing huts that are built on stilts. Our guide cut the engine and we drifted for about 15 minutes enjoying the breeze and scenery before heading back to the pier.

I am not a huge fan of monkeys, but I loved this experience, and I highly recommend it! We combined visiting the swimming monkeys in the afternoon with an evening visit to the nearby famous weekend floating marketAmphawa.
